Description of Third Grade Courses
Art
  • uses crayons and chalk to draw pictures derived from experiences, fantasy, and book
  • designs paper masks and discusses uses of masks in various cultures
  • designs sock puppets and writes dialogue for the puppets in different languages
Communication Arts and Reading
  • summarizes orally presented information
  • interprets poetry with choral speaking
  • begins to appreciate literature that reflects our multicultural society
  • distinguishes between fact and opinion
  • expands vocabulary in all content areas
  • keeps personal journals and learning logs

Health and Physical Education
  • participates in climbing, supporting, and balancing activities on gym equipment
  • continues to take part in physical fitness activities for flexibility, muscular strength, a healthy heart, and good circulation
  • understands that germs are found in air, in drinking water, in food, on animals' bodies, and on the human body
  • understands that everyone at some time wins and at some time loses
Mathematics
  • uses graphs and charts to organize information and find patterns
  • adds and subtracts, including the use of decimals (tenths, hundredths)
  • multiplies and divides by any counting number from 1 through 10
  • explains the meaning of fractions and mixed numerals

Science
  • classifies plants by their physical characteristics and observes the life cycle of plants
    solves scientific problems by observing, classifying, measuring, predicting, recording, and interpreting data
  • understands variations within the following vertebrae groups: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish
  • gathers information on a variety of invertebrate groups (shells and insects)
  • observes, recite, and explains the changes of weather from season to season and in different parts of the world
  • recognizes and understands the properties of light
Social Studies
  • explores a variety of urban, suburban, and rural communities around the world: (e.g. in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, South Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, and Western Europe)
  • investigates social, political, economic, geographic, and historic elements in urban, suburban, and rural communities around the world
  • understands the celebration of our nation's heritage and celebrations in other communities around the world
  • uses maps and globes for learning about world communities
  • understands people in all communities as producers and consumers of goods and services

Computer Education
  • uses appropriate software to reinforce leanings in subject areas, and develop basic, problem-exploration, and critical-thinking skills
  • uses a simple word processing program to develop language and writing skills
  • uses a simple desktop publishing program to develop language and writing skills
    uses appropriate interactive technologies (e.g. CD-ROM) to learn basic research skills
  • names, saves, and prints documents using word processing, desktop publishing and graphic software
Library Skills
  • understands publication date and/or copyright date
  • uses guide words to pinpoint subtopics of entries in encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • uses the card catalog (automated, where available) and understands the differences among the three types of catalog entries
